Film Review: Destination Wedding

Writer-director Victor Levin’s two-hander relies on the charisma of its protagonists. Destination Wedding works rather well for the most part.

Lindsay is reluctantly attending a destination wedding. She gets talking to Frank, who is equally miserable to be there. Together, they attempt to survive the weekend…

Writer and director Victor Levin has created something a little unusual with Destination Wedding. From the premise, viewers would be forgiven for thinking the film is a formulaic romcom. All the elements are here after all, the abrasive initial meeting, throwing the two protagonists together, the wedding, the exotic location. Yet Levin’s film offers something more interesting than this. Concentrating solely on the protagonists, the film is a dialogue-heavy exploration of a burgeoning relationship between two less likely leads.

The film is entirely focused on the two leads, even in scenes where there are plenty of others around. It takes a little while to realise that Destination Wedding is going in this direction. The only audible line by someone else is off camera, and not in English. Instead, the film keeps closely with the protagonists as their relationship develops from aggravation, to truce, to romance.

As expected, the emphasis is on the dialogue. The writing is good overall, with some wry observations. The complaint about destination weddings themselves is right on the nail. Both characters have a misanthropic attitude, which is rather refreshing at first but does get a little tiresome. Overall, it is a positive that the protagonists are less than peppy.

Levin keeps his camera very still, with plenty of lengthy shots. Juxtaposed with the rapid and plentiful conversation, a strong contrast is created. The filmmaker clearly wants the script to tower above other considerations. Winona Ryder delivers a most watchable and convincing performance as Lindsay. Ryder‘s chemistry with Keanu Reeves here is much more persuasive than in their first joint outing Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Reeves gives his usual spiel, yet it works here suitably well.

Destination Wedding should prove the right antidote for those those unimpressed by standard romcoms.

Destination Wedding is available on DVD from 1st July 2019, and on Digital Download now.

Film Review: Siberia

Director Matthew Ross’ thriller Siberia offers a suitably engaging first half. The second half derailment makes for an ultimately unsatisfying film.

Lucas Hill, an American diamond trader, travels to Russia to negotiate a deal to sell rare diamonds to a Russian businessman. When his contact goes missing, Lucas finds himself in Siberia trying to salvage the deal…

With its stylised opening credits and score, Siberia appears to ape Cold War thrillers of an earlier era. Indeed the elements are present; an American with secretive business in Russia, a missing contact, and a shadowy underworld. Unfortunately these aspects do not combine in an appealing fashion.

Matthew Ross’ film concentrates on an American hoping to sell rare diamonds to business contacts in Russia. The film sets up the mystery of the missing contact, sending protagonist Lucas Hill on a mission to find him and salvage the deal. Screenwriter Scott B. Smith and Ross do not give too much away at first, with a secretive protagonist with a limited timeframe.

There is sufficient mystery in the first half of the film to keep viewers engaged. It is unclear whether why the contact is missing, and if indeed he is a red herring. The narrative takes Lucas from Saint Petersburg to an unforgiving Siberian town. The threat here seems palpable, and feeds into the thriller format.

As the narrative progresses, the film becomes less enjoyable. The burgeoning relationship between Lucas and Katya never feels authentic. Some of the occurrences in the second half of the film seem nonsensical. There does not seem to be a good enough reason for Lucas to go back once he is safe, save for the fact the film has not had its climax. Every development pushes at plausibility.

Those hoping for action will be disappointed. Although the finale of Siberia does offer a shootout, this is not delivered with any finesse. The character development of Lucas is unconvincing; he simply does not seem smart enough to do what he is doing. Keanu Reeves is in monosyllabic mode, but there is no fault to attribute to him here. Ana Ularu is perfectly adequate as Katya. Both her and Lucas are surrounded by caricatures.

Siberia hints strongly at a Cold War thriller, but does not deliver the goods. A disappointing watch.

Siberia is released in cinemas and on Digital HD on 16th November 2018.

Film Review: John Wick: Chapter Two

With John Wick: Chapter Two,  director Chad Stahelski returns with a sequel that is more successful than its progenitor.

After winding up some final business, John Wick wants to retire back to his quiet life. However, a face from the past demands John Wick pays his debt in the form of an assassination job…

John Wick: Chapter Two begins with a bang, and rarely lets up. It is a tour de force of ultraviolent action. The film surpasses the 2014 original, in terms of pacing, style and overall entertainment. Whereas John Wick offered an enticing revenge movie, the sequel finesses this formula.

The film is an onslaught of frenzied action which occupies the vast majority of the two-hour running time. The brief respites mostly work to provide exposition and background to the world of John Wick. There is an entertaining montage sequence which shows exactly how Wick gets his gadgets and intel. The stylish tics from the first film reemerge here, and are executed to a greater degree. Lighting is key in several of the action sequences, from the neon lights in Rome to the the futuristic gauze of the subway station.

Action sequences are choreographed exceptionally well. The film is undoubtedly graphic in its violence. However, it is so unrelenting, that it does not have the same impact as a more sparing use of graphic violence. Rather, the film’s action sequences emphasises the movement and flow of combatant figures. Stahelski directs these sequences with a grace more akin to dance choreography.

Keanu Reeves is not stretched in reprising this muted action hero. Ian McShane is more fun as hotel owner Winston, whilst Riccardo Scamarcio plays up his antagonist role. Laurence Fishburne, likewise, seems to enjoy his role. Littered throughout the film are self-deprecating takes, and Fishburne appears to relish in his part of these.

John Wick: Chapter Two is a must-see for action movie fans. This sequel completes the rare task of outperforming the original film. With an opening for a third film, it will be interesting to see whether Stahelski can continue this form.

Film Review: John Wick

John Wick

Director Chad Stahelski’s John Wick is a stylish action thriller with neo noir overtones. The film is entertaining throughout.

Recovering from the death of his wife, former hit man John Wick is slowly starting to recover when his new hope is taken from him. With nothing to lose, John is on a revenge mission…

John Wick is a successful directorial debut from stunt co-ordinator Chad Stahelski. The film works well thanks to its pacing and strong action sequences. John Wick barely offers a respite from the action, and is a better film for it. Stahelski clearly knows the film’s strengths.

The premise of the film is simple, but not much more is required to set up the sequence of action. John Wick is a straightforward revenge tale, but one that engages with a brisk pace and a lack of unnecessary derailments. The humour present in the film is a good tool to acknowledge the absurdity of some of the situations. And yet John Wick endears with its refreshing lack of pretension.

The protagonist’s story is told mostly in flashbacks. The beginning of the film is effective in informing the audience of the present situation without spending too much time on the past. More of an idea of the character of John Wick is given through others rather than the character himself. The protagonist functions as something of a blank slate, allowing supporting characters to build up an impression of him. The antagonist in John Wick is rather caricature, however there is slightly more to him, which is revealed later in the film.

John Wick‘s soundtrack is good, and the art direction gives the film a neo noir feel with its use of colour and artificial lighting. Never known for superb acting, Keanu Reeves is well cast as the the detached hit man.

With its finely executed fight sequences, John Wick is a most enjoyable action movie. Fans of the genre should lap up this offering.

I remember having these wonderful chicken strips at Tomorrowland in Florida’s Disney World many years ago. I don’t think this new film is about them, however.
