Film Review: The Dead Don’t Die

Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die is not quite as satisfying as the package suggests. Nevertheless, there is still plenty to enjoy. 

Cliff is police chief of the small town of Centerville. When strange occurrences take place, Cliff and his officers try to figure out how to protect the town and its residents…

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, The Dead Don’t Die is probably the most star-studded zombie film ever made. From the main roles to minor characters, the film is populated with well-known faces. On the surface, the offering is most enticing. A zombie film with a focus on comedy, combined with the filmmaker’s offbeat appeal. 

The narrative begins well. The film introduces main characters and supporting characters, as well as the locale, in an interesting fashion. The humour is pretty effective as the narrative unfolds. The camaraderie between Cliff and Ronnie in particular a joy to watch. There is some on the nose social commentary, yet this is not unexpected.

The narrative builds towards the inevitable. Yet it also offers potential heroes in the ramshackle group of individuals in the small town. The film actually is less interesting with the increase of undead presence, oddly enough for a zombie film. Jarmusch chooses not to follow an obvious route however. Instead, The Dead Don’t Die offers a few unexpected moments before reaching its conclusion. 

The only issue with The Dead Don’t Die is that the second half feels like it has run out of steam. The jokes do not land as well, with a second fourth wall-breaking joke feeling flat. Whilst more gore was definitely not a requirement, some of the characters are completely underused. 

Several previous Jarmusch collaborators appear. Adam Driver and Bill Murray are as good value as ever, work well with Chlöe Sevigny. Tilda Swinton is great, while Caleb Landry Jones, Danny Glover, and Steve Buscemi are on good form. Production values are good, particularly makeup. 

The Dead Don’t Die is only a little disappointing given how much promise the film had. The film is still an enjoyable watch.

The Dead Don’t Die Trailer

Rocketman Featurette

Midsommar stars Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, and Jack Reynor. The film will be released in UK cinemas on 5th July 2019.

Crawl Trailer

Dark River Poster

Gringo is a dark comedy about a businessman who finds himself at the mercy of colleagues and local drug lords in Mexico. The film features an all-star cast that includes David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, and Amanda Seyfried. Gringo is directed by Nash Edgerton (brother of Joel), and is set for release on UK screens on 9th March 2018.

Oceans 8 Trailer

Here is the first trailer for Oceans 8. The film features the same big heist set-up as its predecessors, albeit with a brand new cast. Sandra Bullock leads the star-studded cast, and is joined by Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, and Anne Hathaway. Oceans 8 is scheduled for release in June 2018.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Trailer

The sequel to the hit 2008 film Mamma Mia! gets a belated sequel. The film is part sequel and part prequel as it focuses on current activity and well as telling the story of Donna when she was younger. Lily James plays the young Donna, and the cast of the original reprise their roles, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will be released on 20th July 2018.

Film Review: The Jungle Book

Jon Favreau’s adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic The Jungle Book is awe-inspiring in its visuals and immensely entertaining in its story.

Mowgli, an orphan boy, is raised in the jungle by wolves, with the help of panther Bagera. When fearsome tiger Shere Khan asserts his dominance, Mowgli must leave the only home he has ever known…

Viewers would be forgiven for being skeptical when a live-action remake of the Disney animated classic The Jungle Book was announced. Thankfully, Favreau’s film quickly assuages any fears. This new version of the film is captivating, distinguishing itself sufficiently from its animated predecessor.

Favreau plays homage to the 1968 animation with this film. The most obvious nod is the music; some of the songs from the original film are adapted well in this new version. Favreau distinguishes the new adaptation in terms of tone. Whilst there is still a playfulness in many scenes, The Jungle Book has more darkness than its predecessor. Rather than a moodiness, this comes across as a desire to depict the brutality of the jungle. There is more of a realism to this version; it does not shy away from some blunt events. Whilst a couple of sequences may be frightening to very young viewers, the tone works overall.

The Jungle Book is well paced; with the narrative progressing well over the running time and momentum building to the climax. The main characters are developed succinctly, but with enough depth to make the audience care about their fates. There is a good balance of humour, adventure and peril, all of which is suitable for a family audience.

Special effects in the film are fantastic; the rendering of all the animals are immensely realistic and believable. The soundtrack is a wonderful accompaniment. Neel Sethi makes a charming young Mowgli. Idris Elba brings striking presence as Shere Khan, and Bill Murray makes a wonderful Baloo.

The Jungle Book is a fantastic adventure, one that brings to life its amazing source material.

The Conjuring 2 Trailer

The Conjuring 2 trailer promises more of the same from horror director James Wan. The follow-up to 2013’s The Conjuring sees Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as ghost hunters Lorraine and Ed Warren. With the action shifting to 1977 for the Enfield haunting, The Conjuring 2 will hit the big screen on 17th June 2016.

The Jungle Book Poster

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer

In the Heart of the Sea Trailer

Ron Howard re-teams with Chris Hemsworth for In the Heart of the Sea. Also starring Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker and Ben Whishaw, the film tells the true story of a New England whaling ship in 1820. In the Heart of the Sea is scheduled for release on Boxing Day, 26th December 2015.

Bridge of Spies Poster

Here is the poster for Steven Spielberg’s latest Bridge of Spies. Starring Tom Hanks, the film is about an insurance claims lawyer who is sent on a mission by the CIA to negotiate the release of a captured American pilot during the Cold War. The Martian Video

The marketing for The Martian is pretty slick, with a series of “training videos” produced, like the one above. With a stellar cast that includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain and Chiwetel Ejiofor, it will be interesting to see if the film can replicate the success of recent space-set blockbusters like Interstellar and Gravity. The Martian is out in UK cinemas on 30th September 2015.

Pan Trailer

The latest Peter Pan adaptation, Pan, is about to be released. Starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund and Rooney Mara, the film is directed by Joe Wright. It will be interesting to see how the film measures up against 1991’s Hook. Pan will hit the big screen on 16th October 2015.

Far From The Madding Crowd

Far From The Madding Crowd was one of the few books I remember reading at high school. How the names Bathsheba Everdene and Gabriel Oak take me back. This adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel comes with good pedigree; it is directed by Thomas Vinterberg and stars Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Michael Sheen. Far From The Madding Crowd is released in UK cinemas on 1st May 2015.

Aloha

Cameron Crowe’s latest Aloha features a stellar cast, including Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, and Rachel McAdams. Bradley Cooper stars as a military contractor who is given the opportunity to return to the site of his greatest triumphs in Hawaii. Aloha is scheduled for release in September 2015.

Cinderella

From the above trailer, it looks as if Cate Blanchett will really shine in Cinderella. As well as, of course, that magnificent-looking slipper. Kenneth Branagh’s update of the classic fairy tale, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, hits UK screens on 27th March 2015.

The Age of Adeline

The premise of The Age of Adeline hinges on an interesting aspect; its protagonist stops ageing at 29 years old. If only that could happen in real life, although granted, it would be a bit odd. Starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford, The Age of Adeline is released on 8th May 2015.

Mommy

Xavier Dolan’s latest offering is receiving a lot of critical praise. Mommy stars Anne Dorval as a widowed mother tasked with the full-time custody of her son, who has ADHD. Mommy is released in UK cinemas on 20th March 2015.

Trainwreck

Here is the first trailer for Trainwreck. Directed by Judd Apatow and written by and starring Amy Schumer, Trainwreck is about a young woman who doesn’t think monogamy is possible. The comedy will be released on UK screens on 28th August 2015.

Hot Pursuit

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are the unlikely double act in Anne Fletcher’s action comedy Hot Pursuit. Straight-laced cop Witherspoon is tasked with protecting Mafia witness Vergara. Hot Pursuit speeds into UK cinemas on 8th May 2015.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Here is the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s update on 1960s television show The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Set against a Cold War backdrop, the film focuses on a CIA agent forced to team up with a KGB operative. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is set for release on 14th August 2015.

Focus

Upcoming thriller Focus stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Rodrigo Santoro. Veteran con man Nicky takes on novice Jess and teaches her the tricks of the trade. Focus hits UK screens on 27th February 2015.

The Best Of The Grand Budapest Hotel Characters

As the handsome poster above illustrates, The Grand Budapest Hotel is an embarrassment of riches in terms of characters and the actors that play them. The poster also reminds me a little of Guess Who? Here are five of the best Grand Budapest Hotel characters…

1. M. Gustave H.

Unsurprisingly, Gustave is the finest Grand Budapest Hotel character. Played by Ralph Fiennes in his first Wes Anderson movie, M. Gustave H. is endlessly amusing. The revered concierge may exhibit morally questionable tendencies, but his demeanour ensures that he is very likeable.

2. Madame D.

Tilda Swinton is almost unrecognisable as Madame D. As the ageing wealthy guest, Swinton’s performance is wonderfully theatrical. She seems to have fun as the memorable Grand Budapest Hotel character.

3. Zero Moustafa

Newcomer Tony Revolori is a fantastic straight man to Fiennes’ posturing Gustave. As lobby boy Zero, Revolori’s deliver is bone dry, and his chemistry with Fiennes is a joy to watch. The master and apprentice relationship develops into a friendship which gives the film heart.

4. Jopling

Being one of strangest of The Grand Budapest Hotel characters is no mean feat. Yet Willem Dafoe’s Jopling is bizarre in both appearance and demeanour. Appearing in some of the film’s most memorable scenes, Jopling is the most menacing antagonist for Gustave and Zero.

5. Serge

With so many brilliant Grand Budapest Hotel characters, Serge had stiff competition. Nonetheless, he elevated himself above the likes of Bill Murray’s M. Ivan and Adrien Brody’s Dmitri. Played by Mathieu Amalric, Serge is a fantastically ambiguous character. His appearance makes adds to the mystery, and his presence is most befitting of the Anderson oeuvre.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is released in cinemas on Friday 7th March 2014.
